The island of Noirmoutier

The town has retained its harbor character, with its pleasure boats and numerous small barques. The island is a treasure trove of beauty, surrounded by pines, holm oaks and salt marshes. Its mild climate favors mimosa and fig trees.

Cycling is the only way to fully appreciate these narrow villages. Access is via the bridge, or by taking the passage du Gois at low tide (floodplain).

Since 1935, the medieval château, one of the best preserved in France, has been home to a museum dedicated to the island’s history. It was listed as a Historic Monument in 1994 and recently restored. Gathered over time since 1884, the museum’s collections bear witness to the island’s heritage, from prehistory to the beginnings of seaside tourism in the 19th century, via maritime history and the troubled period of the Vendée wars. The museum also boasts one of the largest public collections of English “Jersey” earthenware.
