The island is a treasure trove of beauty, surrounded by pines, holm oaks and salt marshes. Its mild climate favors mimosa and fig trees.  <\/p><p    >Cycling is the only way to fully appreciate these narrow villages. Access is via the bridge, or by taking the passage du Gois at low tide (floodplain). <\/p><div class=\"lireplus fc-desk\"><p    >Read more<\/p><div class=\"group\"><p    >Since 1935, <strong>the medieval ch\u00e2teau<\/strong>, one of the best preserved in France, has been home to a museum dedicated to the island&#8217;s history. It was listed as a Historic Monument in 1994 and recently restored. Gathered over time since 1884, the museum&#8217;s collections bear witness to the island&#8217;s heritage, from prehistory to the beginnings of seaside tourism in the 19th century, via maritime history and the troubled period of the Vend\u00e9e wars.
